The big advantage of the “disable notifications for this host/service” rules, no matter how they’re associated with hosts & services, is that the GUI will shown an icon in the service’s icon/menu column indicating that notifications are disabled. Misusing the “cancel notification” notification rule on the other hand isn’t readily visible.
