CMC crashing. tmp files?

CMK version: 2.1.0p9

In the last week, checkmk seems to be crashing quite a lot for me. If I do omd status the cmc service is not running. I can start it without a problem. There is nothing in the cmc.log about the crash of the service.
When starting the cmc service it says something like preparing temp directory. The temp directory /sites/cmk/tmp is ~160mb, with almost all of it tmpXXXXX files in /tmp/check_mk.
Sidenote: tmpfs is not mounted, since it’s deployed via Nomad. Github issue about this

Can those files be deleted? Could this be the source of the problem?
