Migrate site from OMD/cmk v1.2.8p20 to CMK raw v1.6.0p13

Our understanding was that if we issue the update command on OMD we would lose Check_MK since it was removed from OMD.

So now we are trying to migrate our OMD sites to a new server with Check_MK raw. Have tried restoring a backup from OMD/check_MK v1.2.8p20 to a site on the new server with CMK raw v1.6.0p13. But it didn’t go very well: “Error running automation call try-inventory (exit code 2), error:
Invalid check entry ‘(‘df’, u’/’, {})’
This entry is in pre Checkmk 1.6 format and needs to be converted”.
And…the hosts only show up in WATO folders not in the monitoring view

Does anyone have some guidance on the best way to go through this process? Is there a way to upgrade Check_MK on our old OMD server without losing it - is that the way to go?

Or should we just plan to start out fresh and manually enter all of our hosts in the new server? Which won’t be too bad for most of our sites, but very time consuming for a couple of them.

Thanks

This has been discussed here:

omd update just “switches” a site from one installed “OMD” version to another - as shown by omd versions. The destination “OMD” version can also be a Checkmk version since they still use the same packaging system like in the “old OMD days” – even the /usr/bin/omd command is still there. So you won’t “lose” Checkmk if you “upgrade” to a Checkmk version.

You can install Checkmk 1.4.x alongside your current OMD version. You should then see them both in the omd versions output and can upgrade your site in-place (instead of using backup/restore into a new empty site). Having a backup is nevertheless highly recommended, of course

And follow the steps in the link given by marco (upgrade from one major release to the next, do not skip versions).
