Can we monitor mssql remotely directly from Checkmk out of the box ? I know there is a mssql agent plugin but in my case, I cannot install the agent directly on the mssql server.

AFAIK there is no DS agent for MSSQL until now but could be useful.
What you could do is using one of the famous Nagios plugins but that’s quite a bit if work to do all the configuration.

You can modify the existing Windows plugin script in a way that it connects to a remote instance. This is possible but not included out of the box.
