Value in "number of views" indicator on the Exchange

I’m wondering: what use is the “eye” icon & the number next to it on the exchange? I guess it’s supposed to show the number of times the URL has been retrieved.

That would be fine if it would actually indicate how many times actual humans have viewed it. However, this number goes up quite a bit even while a new package hasn’t even been approved yet & cannot be found or retrieved:

Seems to me it’s just a “feel good” element for mod authors, as in “yay, number go up”.

Thanks, but please don’t misunderstand me, this isn’t super important to me, nor do I think this is critical in general. I just found it a curiosity, given that these plugins hadn’t even been available publicly.
