What I’d like to do is be able to name the network interfaces for various hosts. So eth1 is “ISP Shaw Cable” and eth2 is “AllStream Fibre” or similar. Each would be different for each host.
I found some references while searching, including the ‘four rules’ blogpost, it seems like there is a flag somewhere I can set to allow me to add a description or alias for an interface, but a lot of the posts are quite old and the WATO config options that are referenced just aren’t there.
I’ts also possible I’m not sure if I’m understanding the it right. Can someone point me in the right direction?
for that you can create a new rule:
Service discovery rules > Network interface and switch port discovery
and use the Port description like it set in the switch or router
So maybe I’m just too much of a newbie here, but I’m not seeing what you’re seeing. I go to WATO, main menu → Host and Service Parameters, then in the search box put in “Network Interface and Switch Port Discovery” and it gives me:
Click on network interface and create a new rule (the 1 in the above screenshot is me having done this before). I see the header and similar to what you’re seeing (I’m on 1.6.0p14), but only the ‘appearance of network interface part’.
I did create a rule as in the above screenshot for a single folder with a single host, went into there and it did show me new interfaces to monitor and unmonitored interfaces, so I did the full refresh and now in that host I have all the interfaces still named the same, but with no data received, and no (apparent) way to edit the services on the host to add the name.
Am I in the wrong place here or am I misunderstanding what this feature can do (or that it’s not able to do what I am hoping I can do)?
Note: I am wanting to add a label by hand through the CMK GUI, not pull in descriptions from the switch/router - which on re-reading seems like what this would do. I’m not wanting that, I am wanting to add a label on a per-host basis almost like a tag onto the interface name.
Ok, so it is (sadly) what I thought. Maybe I’ll submit a feature request to add a short description of a connection by hand without needing to have it configured.
