We have just upgraded Checkmk from Raw 2.2.0p26 to Raw 2.2.0p32 and will soon upgrade to Raw 2.3.0p12. After this we will upgrade to enterprise edition 2.3.0p12.
We would like to know if we have to upgrade all the agents running version 2.2.0p26 in Windows and Linux to each of this versions in every step or when we are finished with all upgrades to enterprise edition 2.3.0p12, just upgrade all the agents to that version?
Can it cause any problems to leave the agents in Windows and Linux at version 2.2.0p26 and only upgrade them to version 2.3.0p12 when we are running enterprise edition 2.3.0p12 on our site?
generally speaking, you only have to upgrade your Checkmk agent if you are missing a new feature to have issues in any way or in a security context.
Other than that, you don’t have to upgrade the agents immediately. If you are using the agent bakery with auto updates, your agents will update automatically after the agents are baked and signed after a Checkmk Server update. Sometimes you can run in some compatibly issues when your Checkmk site is a lower version than an agent version. For example, Windows agent running 2.3.0p12, but you are still using a Checkmk server 2.2.0 server. Can and probably will cause some issues.
Thus, your Checkmk server version should always be higher than the used Checkmk agent version. Keeping your Checkmk agents up to date is good IT hygiene and should be the overall goal. There are exceptions in case of some legacy systems that don’t support the new agent anymore. There you won’t have any other choice other than using an older agent.
I think it’s a good path to only install the enterprise agent once you have enterprise installed and can use the agent updater.
as you want the baked agent and perhaps automatic updates (one enterprise feature) I’d install that agent once you have enterprise. you can aslo write a small install script (we have dont that both for bash and powershell) that uses the rest-api to download the agent, do TLS registration and registration for automatic updates
