[Check_mk (english)] Check_MK version compatibility

Hi List,

We are monitoring around 400 devices with 4 pollers and 1 master and one PNP server.

Currently we are using Check_MK version 1.2.4 and OMD 1.10. Now we want to migrate to Check_MK Enterprise Edition 1.2.6p16.

We are going to start migration from pollers and then master.

My questions are:

  1. Will Pollers with version 1.2.6p16 will be compatible with Check_MK version 1.2.4?

  2. Can we push configurations from master with Check_MK 1.2.4 to Pollers 1.2.6p16?

I would expect it to work better if you upgrade the master
first…generally it’s more likely that newer software
can recognize older versions than vice versa.

For major upgrades, I try to backup the site before doing the update

so I can recover if something goes sideways.

I generally to the master...verify that everything seems ok, then do

the slaves a few minutes later…if I run into
major problems, I delete the sites and rename the backups to the
original name to recover as quickly as possible.

I had some problems going to 1.2.8* from 1.2.6* due to some

decisions I made way back in 1.2.4 (or maybe earlier)
about the site names in distributed monitoring config (the id didn’t
match the site name) which caused me no
end of grief. Also I found it was better to set the ‘monitored on
host’ in the folder rather than the host config
when I needed to switch site names as the upgrade didn’t convert the
setting so it is much quicker to manually
change the setting in the folder config rather than having to change
it on each host config.

Hi John,

I will say the best and easiest way would be to upgrade all systems at the same time.
On my systems I do it in the following order.

  • all slave sites
  • last the central master site
    Until the last step you should not try to push the configuration to the slaves or any other configuration.
    If you do some tests with a clone of your running OMD machine, the time per site to update should not more the 30min to 1hour.
