[Check_mk (english)] Cisco Switch/Firewall - Interface name/description

Hello all!

I just finished adding about 90 switches and asa devices.

When I review the checks created for them, I noticed something I would like to ask if/how can I change.

In the device interfaces, if you configure a description, then in check_mk we see the description but not the interface name (ex: PORT TO WAN or Gigabitport 0/0/0 ).

Is possible to change this in check_mk so that we see port name and description?

Thanks!

Fred

Personally, I use WATO>Global settings>Inventory - automatic service detection and select Use description as service name for network interface checks (change to On from default Off)
Then re-inventory a switch to test. You sometimes have to do a full scan.

After, feel free to bulk inventory to pick up all the names from the other switches to make it faster.

That setting shows you the name of the port under Service of the host, and then under Status detail you will see the description.

Hi Brian, Frederico,

Meanwhile the setting in global settings is deprecated (since 1.2.6 I think) and will be removed in some later versions.

Since 1.2.6 the setting’s done in “Host & service parameters → Parameters for discovered services → Interface and switch port inventory/discovery”.

The rest is exactly like Brian said.

Regards,
Marcel

Hello Marcel and Brian

First thanks a lot for both fast replies. You guys ROCK!

Then I am ashamed as I came to this menu to look for something about this and was so blind I didn’t see this option…. ßFacepalm!

Thanks a lot for your time, this does the trick.

Best regards,

Fred

Thanks Marcel!
I’m still on 1.2.4p5 but I sure do have those options like you just mentioned. Your way is the better bet, especially since alias/description varies from switch manufacturer to switch manufacturer. hp usually uses descriptions, however I’ve had older ones use the alias option instead. Instead of making the global change, you can use the technique you described and it’s much mo’ betta’

Thanks!

Brian
