[Check_mk (english)] faulty cpu utilisation on windows agents

Hi,

today i found out that all my windows servers report wrong cpu utilization. They are mostly between 60% and 70% but actually most of these servers are just waiting to do something – in task manager they might never reach 5%

here is an example:

#cmk -nv SELBACHSRV

Check_mk version 1.2.0p1

CPU utilization OK - 79% used / 4 CPUs (in last 570 secs)

Disk IO SUMMARY OK - 250.62KB/sec read, 133.02KB/sec write

LOG Application OK - no error messages

LOG Windows PowerShell OK - no error messages

Memory and pagefile OK - Memory usage: 26.4% (0.9/3.2 GB), Page file usage: 16.7% (0.8/5.1 GB)

System Time OK - Offset is -0.2 sec (levels at 30/60 sec)

System Updates OK - 8 important […]

Uptime OK - up since Mon Jul 9 11:30:21 2012 (8d 08:52:11)

fs_C:/ OK - 68.1% used (33.23 of 48.8 GB), (levels at 86.0/93.0%), trend: -29.62MB / 24 hours

fs_J:/ OK - 88.5% used (1236.25 of 1397.2 GB), (levels at 96.3/98.2%), trend: +128.99MB / 24 hours

service_Apache2.2 OK - running (start type is auto)

service_lanmanserver OK - running (start type is auto)

OK - Agent version 1.2.0p2, execution time 21.9 sec|execution_time=21.891

Any idea whats the problem – am I the only one with that problem?

I'm afraid not!

I've just installed 1.2.0p3 on a couple windows servers. Windows Task Manager is reporting CPU usage as 3%-5% on both servers, but check_mk is alerting red with 96% CPU Utilisation!

Does anyone know why this is happening?

It applies to all our Windows servers here, no matter how many processors they have.

Windows 2000, 2003, 2008, 2008R2.

Reports 70+ % on all.

check_mk polls every 10 minutes here if that makes any difference. It shouldn't, the number returned seems totally bogus regardless.

Cheers,

Phil

Hi,

don't know if it helps but I don't see this behaviour in an 1.2.p2 based installation.
Maybe this is hardware- or cpu related?
Are these machines virtual machines? If so, which virtualisation technology? If these are real machines, which cpu models? All the same?

we have just kvm-based VMs and no problems with the cpu-checks so far.

Well, my guess is:
there will be an update, if and only if the problem can be reproduced somewhere else. It would be cool if somebody who got this problem could submit some of the needed info (mentioned in my earlier mail).

Without additional information such problems are really hard to debug.

Hello list,

As some of you already mentioned, it is really hard to track down such problems.

There might be a real bug, but one thing we need to know is where the check fetches its information from. The check uses the

"Processor(_Total)\% Processor Time"|

(PERF_100NSEC_TIMER_INV | Microsoft Learn) performance counters of the systems.

This value seem to measures the average percentage usage of the processor time of all available cores.

So, to dig deeper, please launch perfmon on such a problematic system and open exactly the counter measured above. Now compare the values with the values shown in check_mk. Do they match (more or less)?

today i found out that all my windows servers report wrong cpu utilization. They are mostly between 60% and 70% but actually most of these servers are just waiting to do something in task manager they might never reach 5%
here is an example:

Disk IO SUMMARY OK - 250.62KB/sec read, 133.02KB/sec write

A couple of servers either did not show correct CPU Utilization or the check_mk_agent died. These servers are running 32-bit Windows 2003 R2 Enterprise Edition.

Windows Application event log shows "Faulting application check_mk_agent.exe, version 0.0.0.0, faulting module check_mk_agent.exe, version 0.0.0.0, fault address 0x00012904.".

Same errors shows when I manually issue "check_mk -v <host>".

change the parameters in "CPU utilization for Windows and ESX Hosts".

Checking perfmon in the windows servers shows low cpu usage but
winperf_processor.util always show high usage.

This seems to be the same problem as mentioned in http://lists.mathias-kettner.de/pipermail/checkmk-en/2013-September/010229.html
(for english version scroll down on the site). Maybe i will compile current 1.2.4p2-client with patch later...

Reported this a long time ago on both (de, en) lists and also to the feedback-mailadress.

Hi,

I have try the patch at http://www.exa-edv.de/downloads/check_mk_agent/1.2.2p3/check_mk_agent.exe.

95% of the windows server have the correct CPU Utilization after the patched.

Thanks
Kian Siong
