[Check_mk (english)] VMware 6.5 and monitoring RAID

Hi,

Had a quick look around, but not a good
look so may have missed this, so please excuse any obvious answers I have
missed.

Looking to monitor the underlying RAID
(AVAGO/LSI) on an (well multiple) VMware ESXi box. Have the SMIS all set
up for VMWare and it is reporting to VMware client ok.

esx_vsphere including hardware sensors
report fine in check_mk, but looking in detail the output this does not
include the RAID, or any storage hw info (not unexpected).

Obviously this is deep specific drivers
etc, so not expecting anything, but is there a way to monitor these RAID
through VMWare using check_mk?

Reasoning is that this is a remote box,
with VMWare on it, but no SNMP info on the RAID or disks at low level,
and last week one started to fail - now fixed - but now wanting to monitor
more closely so was hoping for SNMP but none available, so at higher level
was hoping VMware could do it - it can just about - so now hoping check_mk
can read what VMWare can now see

Thanks

Ben

Why not monitor via the management board ( DRAC, iLO, etc. )? This is what I do for my VMware hosts since as you mentioned, it doesn’t present itself via VMware. This works just fine. I can send you some screenshots
of the data I see if that helps.

Thanks.

I already tried monitoring via SNMP on
the Supermicro motherboard but the storage does not appear on that. I
found out the ‘card’ for the storage/RAID is a Avago Megaraid SAS 9361-8i
type, but there is no way I can currently see to ‘get to it’ to allow monitoring
(it is cloud bare metal so can’t physically do anything  ), so not how
else to proceed that direction - unless you have some ideas - , which is
why I was hoping check_mk may have done something…long shot!

I don’t think this is possible unless your RAID controller has its’ own dedicated NIC for monitoring (some Areca cards
do, probably more).

The best advice I found is to monitor the RAC/iLO module if you have it. This is only useful if you use a RAID controller
that is supported and monitored by the RAC/iLO module.

FYI: this problem with VMware is the same whatever monitoring tool you use. I know Dell servers with ESXi can be monitored with Dell OpenManage, but that product doesn’t use SNMP for monitoring ESXi hosts - I think it uses WSMan.

Hallo,

I don t know the hardware but if there isn't da device like hp ilo you have two more options

1)
the raidcontroller has an own network inferface

2)
Supermicro or vmware has own packages for ESX
perhaps here?

Hello
I believe you need to install the 'lsiprovider' (CIM provider) on the esx host.
With this installed, you should see a 'Storage' section under 'monitoring > hardware' in the ESX webui.
The check_mk vsphere agent's hardware-sensors check will then also monitor these storage sensors.
I have a similar setup and this works for me.
