It’s been a few years since I’ve used Checkmk and back then I started with OMD. I see now that OMD is separate from Checkmk. Can someone point me to why the split? I’m very early in my research but would like to understand what OMD and Checkmk gives with respect to monitoring our small office.
Perhaps someone can give me a quick overview of why Checkmk is better than OMD.

OMD stands only for Open Monitoring Distribution and more like a distribution format for many small tools together needed for a monitoring environment.
At the moment there are two different flavors, this one here the CheckMK and OMD-Labs from Consol.
With the two versions you have different components distributed and also different functionality.
What you use depends on your needs and wishes for the monitoring environment.
