Cisco devices - possible to collect serials of devices/modules

Hi everyone,

We are currently using CheckMK in a production environment and have roughly 3000 cisco switches being actively monitored for uptime, services and basic bandwith utilisation through SNMP. The system is working absolutely fine and is a fantastic monitoring tool

One of the possible added value items from our perspective would be wether or not it is possible for checkMK to collect the serial numbers, chassis model types and possibly even the serial/types of modules or SFP’s used.

I have tried to look for this in the inventory of checkMK, but as far as I can tell, this is not possible. No serial numbers or chassis information is being populated.

Is this possible with checkMK? It would mean a immense burden off our back administratively.

We would higly preferred like to keep with checkMK for this functionality. But if it turns out this is not supported, can someone recommend me a product that can perform this? (If this is a illegal question on the forum, I apologize to the mods!)

Kind regards

Yes, with the default HW/SW inventory you should have already some data about serial number and model number inside the “Hardware” → “Physical Components” → and so on
If your hardware is not shown correctly you can try the following plugin from my colleague.

Just wanted to give some feedback here: it is working perfectly with the hardware/software inventory feature and I highly recommend the above plugin provided by Andreas.

CheckMK is correctly scanning the entire cisco inventory of all our 3000+ remote sites.

The only remark from my side for anyone reading this is that you should provide sufficient ram/cpu. The inventory can be resource intensive the first time.

I set the interval to every 2 days for now and the client is really happy to for once see a correct reflection of the network assets directly scanned from reality, as opposed to some offline database that has errors and inaccuracies.

Hi,

I’m very interested in this plugin, but the website seems not to exist anymore. Could anyone provide the plugin or an alternative?

Thanks.
Peter

My colleague who has this website is on vacation and his server looks like it is down :frowning:
At the beginning of September he should be back

Hi,

the website is still not reachable, is there any eta?

Thanks,
Peter
