"Error reading from remote server" after changing Host and Domainname on Device Settings

Version: 1.5.3
CheckMk Virtual Appliance

Error message:

Proxy Error

The proxy server received an invalid response from an upstream server.
The proxy server could not handle the request

Reason: Error reading from remote server

Apache/2.4.38 (Debian) Server at uat01checkmk.net01internal.com Port 80

I got the error above right after changing the host and domainname on the Web interface device settings page. Defaults were cma, local
I can still monitor my sites but I cannot access the checkmk appliance web interface, as this error keep showing up after password input.

Also, I cannot access checkmk through SSH using PuTTy, it keeps saying access denied. Please what is the defaulf username to provide to PuTTy in this case?

Note: the CheckMk Appliance is installed on a VM on a ESXi Server.

Looking forward to your help.

To what did you change the hostname? Are there any special characters in there?

For SSH: There are no default credentials. You have to configure them yourself on the console of the VM.

Thanks a lot Robin for the quick reply.

Unfortunately yes, I included some special characters in the hostname including space, this error is from me as I entered the descriptive name of the server instead. How do I correct that please?

Also, I only had the option of setting a password for accessing console via SSH whenever I choose to configure SSH access from launching the Virtual Appliance from ESXi. While accessing using PuTTy, I have to give a username, I tried “cmkadmin” with the password I set at the VA config, and also my site username and password but both didn’t work.

Ah, bummer. Can you grep for the name you set on the command line? You might be able to replace the erroneous hostname in the configuration files. But this is not really supported and might lead to other issues. Maybe deploying a new appliance would be the easiest and cleanest way?

Regarding SSH: You can enable access via SSH for the site user and the root user. Depending on what you enabled, the username is the name of your site or root.

Thank you Robin! I found out I couldn’t login through SSH because as a Demo user, I can’t connect as root.
So I just re-installed the Virtual Appliance again.

Thanks.
