Hostname not IP address when scanning for hosts

Hi all,

I’m new to CheckMK, and I have created a folder and configured a network scan. The scan find hosts, but they all have hostnames with IP addresses. Why is that? I want hostnames and not IP addresses as hostnames. I thought CheckMK could resolve dns names.

Appreciate if someone can point me in the right direction.

Thank you in advance.

Checkmk is able to resolve names while network scanning if the DNS provides PTR records for the IP addresses.

Thanks  I have the DNS server in my Windows 2012 server, and created a PTR record for one host. However, the network scan still shows IP addreses.

Is there anything else I need to check? Restart CheckMK?

Have you removed the hosts from the network scan folder? Only then will checkmk recreate them on the next scan.

Yes, I have removed them. I think there is a issue with the DNS server, so I will check more into that.

Thanks for your help. I was able to fix the DNS server in the Windows 2012 R2, and after a new scan in checkmk, I now have hostnames and not just IP addresses :grinning: :+1:
