Modify host custom attribute using the API

I’ve added some host custom attributes for location:

bldg
room
rack
racku

Each is just a text string to make locating a system a bit easier. I’d like to script an API call to update those attributes but haven’t figured out the correct syntax yet. Anyone done this and can share how they got it done?
