Hi everyone,
we’d like to introduce the Monitoring Coverage Analyzer (MCA), a free MKP (GPL v2) for Checkmk 2.5.0p15 and later. MCA looks at the agent data Checkmk already has, finds applications that are running on your hosts but not monitored yet (databases, web servers, Hyper-V, SAP, Veeam, Citrix, …), and tells you which agent plug-in or special agent would cover them. This includes not only the built-in checks, but also checks from the MKPs installed on your site.
Why this is helpful: in environments that have grown over the years, no one knows every server by heart, and monitoring gaps often only show up when something fails. MCA gives you an overview of the coverage across all hosts and sites, plus one service per host, so you can close these gaps step by step. MCA itself needs nothing on your hosts: it uses the agent data Checkmk has already cached instead of querying them again. It works in distributed setups; the analysis runs on the central site only, the remote sites just need the package.
Detection is based on a curated rules file, complemented by a fuzzy search across all check plug-ins available on your site. It is heuristic by design, so false positives and false negatives can’t be ruled out completely; findings you don’t care about can be ignored with a Setup rule.
The rules file is where we need you: please tell us about software MCA misses or reports wrongly, and suggest or contribute rules. You can attach an encrypted, pseudonymized support file (mcactl support-data) that only we can read.
