Monitoring Microsoft Azure Cloud: Check_mk Enterprise edition vs Cloud edition

Good Day!

Can we monitor Azure cloud using Check_mk Enterprise edition? If yes, then whats so special about Cloud edition as far as Azure cloud monitoirng is concerned.

The article about Azure monitoring should have all the details:

Hi Robert,

Thanks for your quick response!

I did check that document. My confusion:

Enterprise Edition = Monitoring below Azure products

• AD Connect
• Azure Virtual Machines
• Load Balancer
• MySQL Database
• PostgreSQL Database
• SQL Databases
• Storage Accounts
• Traffic Manager
• Virtual Network Gateways
• Webserver

Cloud Edition = Enterprise Edition + Readily available cloud dashboards + Cloud Native deployment + Push/pull agents + Monitor Cloud workloads

Is my understanding correct? Or did I miss anything.

Could you please advise. Thanks!

Hi @sevma

welcome to the forum.

Your understanding is pretty much correct. You can do monitoring for basic cloud services with Checkmk Enterprise. On all three major public cloud vendors, this covers compute, database, storage services.

This is designed for users who predominantly use Checkmk in on-prem scenarios, but need the capability to also monitor some ‘lift-and-shift’ scenarios.

The Cloud Edition is designed for customers that are further along in their cloud transformation

  • using cloud-native technologies, such as serverless functions and (managed) container services
  • deploy their monitoring infrastructure in a public cloud environment
  • want to deploy using machine images provided by the cloud vendor

To enable these use cases, the Cloud Edition contains a few features not available in the CEE:

  • monitoring for various cloud-native technologies (such as AWS Lambda)
  • push-mode for the agent (useful if your monitoring server resides in the cloud but needs to monitor on-prem systems)
  • pre-built cloud dashboards
