Could someone help understand what if the networking segment is selected WAN, what will be impact on monitoring . Is there any documentation for it
This is just another host attribute that can be used in conditions of rules. Nothing special here.
There is one pre-configured rule that sets latency and loss thresholds higher in the parameter ruleset for ping checks.

@r.sander refers to the rule “PING and host check parameters” which comes with checkmk by default:
Without this rule (i.e. for non-WAN hosts) the values are 200ms/500ms, 80%/100%, 5, and 1.
