Parent/child notification configuration issue

CMK version: OMD - Open Monitoring Distribution Version 2.2.0p10.cee
**OS version:**Ubuntu 22.04.3 LTS

Description:
I configured mail notifications for my whole team. Unfortunately if for example the firewall of site A is offline we receive a bunch of mails for every system in the site which the corresponding state (down/unreachable).

What I would expect is that only the notification for the parent host will be triggered and the child hosts will get unreachable but there shouldn’t be a notification about that state change (up → unreachable).

That is my current notification rule.

I know I could just enable match host event type and untick state change up → unreachable, but in the docs it is mentioned that it should suppress unreachable notifications automatically and I would like to understand the logic behind correctly:
https://docs.checkmk.com/latest/en/monitoring_basics.html#parents
https://docs.checkmk.com/latest/en/notifications.html#parents

Thanks in advance for any help

hi @n3m0

you are right, this is what should (or rather ‘should not’) happen.

Could you show configuration of the notification rule what host state changes trigger a notification? Could it be that the “ANY → UNREACHABLE” box is checked?

Hi @elias.voelker,

tbh I’m glad your saying that this shouldn’t be happening

So the configuration of the notification rule looks a bit empty:

I created for each site a contact group and assigned each user the corresponding group. For global admins there is the group everything so they get notified about any issue/problem. And there we only excluded some hosts and some services, but there is no configuration for the host event types in place.

Can you check the “Match Host Event Type” box and show what is checked there?

If I check the box it looks like this:

edit: If I create a new rule it looks like this:
