Ubuntu Password

Hello,

I am looking to upgrade from 1.5.0p11, but I realized that I don’t know the root password for Ubuntu, it was never documented and has been lost to the ages :frowning:

I followed the directions to create a backup, but from what I can tell there is no way to get to it since I can’t log in to the OS to get the backup files.

My plan was to just build a new system and import the backup files so I didn’t have to start all over, but since it doesn’t look like I can do that now, does anyone have suggestions on another approach or should I just not waste my time and start over with a new system?

Thanks,
Mike

Hey,

Schedule a downtime in which the Checkmk Monitoring System won’t be accessible and won’t be alerting your colleagues.
Then take a look at setting a new root password via the single user mode in Ubuntu.

This should get you started (works with different Ubuntu versions too!): https://linuxconfig.org/how-to-reset-lost-root-password-on-ubuntu-18-04-bionic-beaver-linux

After this you can reboot the system, create a backup and import it to your new system.

Feel free to ask questions if you got any

Thanks Daniel, I will take a look at this now. Appreciate the help.
