Upgrading from Ubuntu 14.04 to 20.04

We have an old install of 1.6.0p11 on Ubuntu 14.04. Attempts to update the OS have failed so I setup a new Ubuntu 20.04 server with the current Check_mk 2.0.0p9.

I backed up my 1.6.0p11 and tried to restore to the new server but that gave en error about it being from ver 1.6.0p11

I need to get my site over to the new server. How do I do that?

Apparently I need to be running the same version of Check_mk on both boxes?

The oldest version for Ubuntu 20.04 appears to be 1.6.0p18 which is newer than my current 1.6.0.p11. From the download site there appears to be a 1.6.0.p18 for Ubuntu 14.04 but when I try to install versions newer than 1.6.0p11 the install fails. I am thinking the 1.6.0.p18 and newer are not actually applicable to 14.04.

Can anyone shed some light on how I get my site over to the new server?

Thanks,

Todd

Uh, this sounds bad. Frankly you should not have waited so long for upgrading. Ubuntu 14.04 is already 28 months out of support.

Maybe you can ask someone from the checkmk team (@fayepal ?) to provide a 1.6.0p11 package for Ubuntu 20.04.

Hi Todd,

I’ll see if I can provide the package or have it available for download temporarily.

Cheers,
Faye

That would be fantastic.

I know this is an old server but attempts to upgrade the OS over the years have failed. Check_mk has been great so I would love to get it moved to a new box.

Thank you.
Todd

Hi Todd,
It’s now available here temporarily: Download archive of outdated Checkmk versions

Hi fayepal,

Thank you for putting that up for me to download.

The downloads I see for 1.6.0p11 are for Ubuntu 14.04 - 19.10. My new check_mk server is Ubuntu 20.04. Will I need to setup a 18.04 server to migrate the data, or is there a 1.6.0p11 for 20.04?

Thanks again,

Todd

Checkmk 1.6.0p11 was released a few week before Ubuntu 20.04, there was no build for this Ubuntu release.

Is there any version of check_mk that was common to the two OS 14.04 and 20.04, such as a 16.0.P14?

I was able to complete the migration thank you r.sander and fayepal!

I setup an Ubuntu 18.04 and used it as an interim server to move from the 1.6.0.0p11 to 2.0.0p9, then move to the 20.04 Ubuntu box

Thank you again!

Todd
