Recurring downtime with flex not working as expected

Hi all,

I am wondering if i unstand the recurring downtime correctly with the ‘flexible’ checkbox.

The maintenance window is every day from 4 AM till 6:30 AM.
I have set that up in the “Recurring downtimes for services” and “Recurring downtimes for hosts”
I have configured that the downtime starts at 4:00 with a duration of 2 hours and 30 minutes, so based on that info my downtime is from 4 AM till 6:30 AM.

I only want that CheckMK will put a service in “Downtime” when that service is reporting an error so that is why i use “Flexible downtime” of 30 mins.

So this should reflect to:

  • service http goes into CRIT at 4:05.
  • CheckMK will put that service in “downtime”.
  • After 30 minutes (length of the flexible downtime) CheckMK will check if service is still CRIT.
  • It its still crit, I should get notified.

That last part, seems not to work because I see in some http service:

I checked some more and now on HOST level

Here I see that my host is also going into downtime but after a few sec. downtime is canceled.

At 8:47 I saw it in my dashboard so I fixed it but no notifications are send when the issue occured (+30m)

In my cmc.log file i see this a couple of times;

I do have found something but I am not sure if that is indeed the issue;
When i look for rules regarding “Notified events for service”, i saw that I didn’t had all events checked.
Might that be the cause of this all that CheckMK is not correctly notified about such kind of events of downtime starting and ending ?

What exactly triggers flexible downtimes to start?

Why are you using both, downtimes for hosts AND downtimes for services?
If you put a host in downtime, all of its services will be put into downtime as well.

Here I see that my host is also going into downtime but after a few sec. downtime is canceled.

I am a bit confused why the downtimes are always cancelled. I would set the Log level in the global settings under “Monitoring Core” - “Logging of the core” - “Downtime” to “Informational” or “Debug”. Then have a look at your cmc.log again when this happens, so you get more info.

Updated my configuration and will wait a couple of days and when I have this issue (cancelled) again, i will put this in this post.

I finally saw a CANCELLED in the downtime history and I checked the CMC.log and at that time in the log i see:
